Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions:

Exactly What is an Ad Network and How Does it Work?

There are millions of different websites on the Internet, each which has a potential audience to deliver to advertisers. Advertising networks aggregate many of these sites, creating a large total inventory of website pages, newsletters and/or email lists to offer to advertisers from many different online publishers.

How will ads placed through GreenAds be tracked and who will provide statistics for impressions, clicks and conversions?

GreenAds’ system will track impressions and clicks for all website ads, graphic or text. This information will be available for each publisher and each advertiser through their respective, individual control panels when they login to GreenAds.

For email newsletter ads and email blasts, the advertiser may request any statistics the publisher has available and GreenAds will make that request on the advertiser’s behalf and pass any data it receives back to the advertiser.

For all ads, the advertiser will always have the option of including unique tracking codes with its URL links so that it can track its GreenAds campaigns itself. It will be clear where to enter this information when the advertiser places an order through GreenAds. A number of affordable online applications make it easy to track clicks (visitors) and conversions (e.g., catalog requests, newsletter subscribers, purchases), including ConversionRuler.com, Clicklab.com, and HyperTracker.com.

Advertiser Questions

Why Should Advertisers Use GreenAds.com?

It's more efficient to buy as much traffic from as few players as possible. Designed as a highly-focused, niche ad network, GreenAds offers advertisers larger, targeted audiences than any one "green" site, with a greater reach.

GreenAds.com allows our advertisers to make a single purchase, specify basic criteria for where they want their creative delivered, and then distributes the ad to all the publishers the advertiser has chosen.

GreenAds.com provides advertisers even deeper targeting through our major categories (e.g., sustainability & environment, health & wellness) and topics. We let advertisers choose exactly where their ads will appear.

And because we work so closely with our member sites, we know their audience inside out. We are psychographically right on track with both our member publishers and our advertisers.

What type of ads can I buy through GreenAds?

GreenAds currently supports the following ad types and sizes for both websites and email newsletters:

Graphic: 120x60, 120x240, 468x60, 728x90, 120x600, 160x600 & 300x250

Text: 25, 50 & 100 words

Publishers can sell and advertisers can buy any of these ad types and sizes through GreenAds. For website ads, any of these ads can be available on a cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) or cost-per-click (CPC) basis. For email newsletter ads and email solos (email blasts), pricing is available on a CPM basis only.

Additionally, list owners can rent their permission-based, opt-in email lists on a CPM basis.

We do not currently support any other ad types, sizes or pricing models.

By what parameters can advertisers place orders?

For website ads, advertisers can place orders by total impressions – “CPM” (cost-per-thousand impressions), or by total numbers of clicks – "CPC" (cost-per-click), where available. Newsletter ads and email solos (aka "blasts") are available by cost-per-thousand (CPM) subscribers only (not by clicks), and advertisers can specify that the ad run from one to three times.

Advertisers can also specify that their ads run ASAP or begin by a specific date – currently, they cannot specify an end date. The end date will be when all ordered impressions or clicks are delivered, or when the total number of email ads has run. GreenAds will communicate with both advertisers and publishers should any potential conflicts or problems arise with an order and inventory availability.

Publisher Questions

Why Should Publishers Join GreenAds?

GreenAds saves publishers time and money related to direct sales; cushions them somewhat from price fluctuations; relieves them from continuous update and investment in ad serving and measurement technologies; and allows them to take on many smaller advertisers than they could normally justify.

GreenAds will help you set rates for your ad inventory, get you more advertisers, and sell more of your ad inventory, including remnant impressions and inventory that you can't easily sell on your own. Just joining GreenAds will help you attract new advertisers you wouldn't normally reach.

For a limited time, as a charter member, you can apply and become a GreenAds publisher without incurring our one-time membership fee. Without a membership fee, and because the relationship is month-to- month, you have nothing to loose and lots to gain.

What advertising inventory can I make available through GreenAds?

See answer, above, to "What type of ads can I buy through GreenAds?"

On the publisher’s registration, there is room to provide the size of only one email list or newsletter, but I have more than one list to rent or newsletter on which I make ad space available. What do I do?

For now, if you have both a list to rent and an email newsletter, please choose to make available on GreenAds only one of these two email opportunities and specify the relevant size of the list. If you have more than one list to rent, or more than one email newsletter, you may combine the sizes of those lists within the same type (i.e., combine either all rental lists or all email newsletter lists) – if you choose to do this, you agree to run any orders across all lists.

We plan to offer publishers greater flexibility to offer different, multiple lists on GreenAds in the future.

Can GreenAds work with our existing ad serving system, Google AdSense or other ad networks in which we participate?

Yes. If you want to continue to run other ads in the same space your GreenAds inventory is located, when there are no GreenAds orders for that space, you can do so. It's as simple as providing us with the alternative ad serving code you have. We will then enter that code into our system as the default code (or ad) so that anytime you aren't earning money from a GreenAds advertiser, you can be serving ads and earning money from other advertisers.

Will we always need to send default ads to you, or is there a way for us to upload them ourselves?

Default ads are those served when no paid GreenAds ads are currently running for your inventory. If you do not provide us with default ads, we will likely run our own in their place.

To provide us with your own default ads, first place them on your web server. Then, just let us know the URL or ad serving code you want to use for each default ad (you can specify one for each piece of ad inventory you make available on the GreenAds network). This way, all you have to do to change default ads is upload the new ones to the same URL/code you provide us on your own server – in that way you maintain control of which of your default ads get displayed at any time.

We’ll set it up so that the default(s) you specify is always served whenever there is no GreenAds order running. Always make sure that the default ad you specify is of the same size and type as the ad inventory it is supposed to occupy.

Can we provide different default ads for the same size and type inventory?

GreenAds does not currently support offering different default ads for the same size and type of inventory.

Will GreenAds be able to notify potential advertisers (and us) when our inventory is sold out or will we be responsible for tracking the available inventory?

Generally, GreenAds will communicate with advertisers about any lack of inventory for their orders. The inventory you make available on GreenAds is supposed to be dedicated inventory (i.e., only GreenAds ads will run on that inventory, whether they’ve been purchased or by default). Therefore, we’ll always know how much inventory is available – and we’ll even rotate multiple ads into a website when feasible to satisfy multiple orders. There may occasionally be questions about your inventory we can’t answer, in which case we would get in touch with you.

What does the GreenAds publisher code look like?

When you sign up for GreenAds and are approved as a publisher, we will email you code snippets for each type of advertising you wish to make available on the network. You simply insert these code snippets on your website and/or email newsletter where the ads should appear. Once you do so, advertisers will be able to come into the GreenAds system and choose to place ads with you. The following is a sample of the iframe code snippet we will send (recommended), though we can also provide ad-serving code in javascript if you prefer:
